Ngā wānanga

A healing space for whānau impacted by suicide

Day wānanga across 2026, each one shaping the next, building toward Mokopapa.

Next: Wānanga Toru — Mokopapa · Te Takinga Marae · 15 October 2026

He aha tēnei?

What a wānanga is

A healing space for whānau who have been impacted by suicide. You come for the day, you eat together, and for those hours nobody expects you to be fine.

There is karakia. There is kōrero, if you want to speak — and complete permission not to. There is time on the whenua. There are people there who have walked this road and are not going to flinch at anything you say.

The wānanga are a series, not one-offs. Each one is designed off the back of the last, and they build toward a Mokopapa — a real unique opportunity, and a real unique approach to suicide prevention. Not many spaces have explored this style of wānanga, or this style of healing.

What to expect

So that nothing about the day is a surprise.

Cost

Free to whānau

Kai and the programme are covered. If getting there is the problem, tell us — we will work it out.

Who

Whānau, however that looks

All ages, all stages, all walks of life. Bring who you need with you. Tamariki are talked through case by case.

Bring

Just yourself

These are day wānanga — come as you are. Nothing to pack, nothing to organise beforehand.

Support

You are not left on your own

Kaimahi are there the whole day. If you need to step out, someone steps out with you.

Privacy

Your business stays yours

What is said in the wānanga stays in the wānanga. We are careful about how invitations reach people, too.

Register for Wānanga Toru

Mokopapa, at Te Takinga Marae, 402 State Highway 33, Mourea — Thursday 15 October 2026. Somebody will come back to you personally, not an automated email. Every question needs an answer before the form will send.

Who Mokopapa is for

Mokopapa is for whānau who have already been to one of the earlier wānanga — Wānanga Tahi at Okataina, or Wānanga Rua at Waiteti. If this would be your first, you are still very welcome with us: join the pānui and we will let you know as soon as the next one opens.

So we can write back to you.

Mokopapa is for whānau who have been to Wānanga Tahi or Wānanga Rua.

No obligation either way. Saying yes here only starts a kōrero.

You do not have to tell us anything about your loss to come. If there is nothing, just write “nothing”.

Rather not fill in a form?

That is completely fine. Ring or email the team and register by having a kōrero instead.

How we handle your details

Registrations go to the wānanga coordinator only. We do not pass names between organisations, and we do not put anybody on a list because of what happened to their whānau.

If you need help before then

A wānanga might be weeks away. Support does not have to be. Call or text 1737 any time, or see all support options.
